CHICAGO — An off-duty Chicago police officer was shot and killed near his home in the Gage Park neighborhood early Sunday morning. Exactly what happened is still under investigation as CPD leaders prepare to speak to the media later this morning.

Based on preliminary information, Chicago police officers initially responded to a ShotSpotter alert for shots fired at the corner of Kedzie and 56th Street at 2:53 a.m. That was followed about five minutes later by a 911 caller who reported shots fired and a man down on 56th Street.

Officers found the victim, who was taken to the University of Chicago Hospital. The officer lives in the immediate area and would be 31 this month.

Investigators were trying to determine if the officers’ cars were still at his home or if he may have been targeted in a carjacking attempt. They were most interested in finding the officer’s dark gray Toyota 4Runner, bearing a University of Chicago specialty plate, which they could not immediately locate at the scene.

One of the first officers at the shooting scene said it appeared that the victim’s firearm was missing.

This story will be updated after CPD updates the media.

CWBChicago was created in 2013 by five residents of Wrigleyville and Boystown who had grown disheartened with inaccurate information that was being provided at local Community Policing (CAPS) meetings. Our coverage area has expanded since then to cover Lincoln Park, River North, The Loop, Uptown, and other North Side Areas. But our mission remains unchanged: To provide original public safety reporting with better context and greater detail than mainstream media outlets. Our editorial email address is news@cwbchicago.com
