Chicago police detectives were able to identify the man who attacked and carjacked an Uber driver because he ordered the rideshare on an account linked to his driver’s license, officials said.
Judge Caroline Glennon-Goodman rejected a state detention petition and sent Juan Salgado, 38, home on an ankle monitor.
Salgado ordered an Uber to pick him up in the 1500 block of West 18th Street on May 26, according to prosecutors. After traveling about a block, Salgado began choking and punching the 40-year-old driver in the back of the head, the petition said.
The driver pulled over in the 1800 block of South Ashland, fled to safety, and called 911. Salgado climbed behind the wheel of the driver’s 2015 Toyota Prius and drove away, the petition stated.
According to the petition, investigators found that an account named “Juan,” associated with Salgado’s license and home address, ordered the fateful Uber ride.
Salgado is due in court again on August 6.

CWBChicago was created in 2013 by five residents of Wrigleyville and Boystown who had grown disheartened with inaccurate information that was being provided at local Community Policing (CAPS) meetings. Our coverage area has expanded since then to cover Lincoln Park, River North, The Loop, Uptown, and other North Side Areas. But our mission remains unchanged: To provide original public safety reporting with better context and greater detail than mainstream media outlets. Our editorial email address is news@cwbchicago.com
