CHICAGO — The drunk driver who killed a 67-year-old bicyclist in Garfield Ridge has two previous DUI convictions, prosecutors say. Michael Kelly, 33, was detained as a safety risk by Judge Shauna Boliker to await trial on a charge of aggravated DUI causing death.
The crash occurred just over a year ago, on June 24, 2023, at 57th and Natchez, about a block from Kelly’s home, officials said. Kelly, 33, was making a left turn in his Nissan Frontier pickup when he allegedly struck bicyclist Jozef Strus.
A police report described Kelly as “cooperative,” saying he voluntarily submitted to blood and urine tests. Tests by the Illinois State Police determined that Kelly had a blood alcohol concentration of between .129 and .182 at the time of the crash, “well over” the .08 legal limit, police said in his arrest report. Prosecutors claimed in a detention petition that he also had Delta-9 THC in his system.
Kelly turned himself in to the police this week.
According to an online obituary, Strus was married and had three adult children.
CWBChicago was created in 2013 by five residents of Wrigleyville and Boystown who had grown disheartened with inaccurate information that was being provided at local Community Policing (CAPS) meetings. Our coverage area has expanded since then to cover Lincoln Park, River North, The Loop, Uptown, and other North Side Areas. But our mission remains unchanged: To provide original public safety reporting with better context and greater detail than mainstream media outlets. Our editorial email address is news@cwbchicago.com
