CHICAGO — Police are investigating a string of carjackings and attempted carjackings that sprang up on the North Side on Sunday morning, including one in which the perpetrators fired a gun. No injuries were reported during the crimes, and no arrests have been announced.

The first hijacking occurred in North Center, near the three-way intersection of Damen, Lincoln, and Irving Park, around 5:35 a.m. A carjacker driving a white car pulled in front of the victim’s Mazda CX3 to block their path, and two gunmen got out.

The robbers took the victims’ valuables and then drove away with the Mazda, according to preliminary information shared with CWBChicago. The two robbers who got out of the white car were described as thin, young Black males wearing black hoodies.

Another carjacking occurred about an hour later near the intersection of Belmont and Sheridan in Lakeview. Two men with guns robbed a couple and drove away with the victims’ blue BMW X3. A third suspect remained inside a gray Mazda while the others, wearing masks, robbed and carjacked the couple, according to initial information. The robbers had descriptions similar to those involved in the North Center incident. They wore face coverings and appeared to be between 18 and 25, according to the victims and witnesses.

At about 10:20 a.m., there was an apparent robbery or carjacking attempt in Roscoe Village. This time, a woman was with her child when a female got out of a four-door Kia and pointed a gun at her in the 2200 block of West Roscoe, according to preliminary information.

The suspected carjacker returned to the Kia and fled after the victim told her that she had a child in the car.

About 15 minutes later, yet another carjacking attempt was reported near Wrightwood and Lincoln in Lincoln Park. Two offenders jumped out of a black sedan, displayed at least one gun, and tried to carjack a man, according to reports.

The victim did not surrender his car and began to chase the suspects, prompting one of them to fire at least two shots. An officer at the scene said they found a bullet hole in the victim’s car.

Officers were told to be on the lookout for three suspects: a Black male wearing black clothing, a Black female wearing black clothing described as “Middle Eastern” in style, and an unknown driver.

CWBChicago was created in 2013 by five residents of Wrigleyville and Boystown who had grown disheartened with inaccurate information that was being provided at local Community Policing (CAPS) meetings. Our coverage area has expanded since then to cover Lincoln Park, River North, The Loop, Uptown, and other North Side Areas. But our mission remains unchanged: To provide original public safety reporting with better context and greater detail than mainstream media outlets.
