CHICAGO — A Chicago man who got shot when he tried to rob a concealed carry holder in December 2022 has been handed a nine-year prison sentence. Jeremiah Brown, 19, pleaded guilty this week to attempted robbery in connection with the case. Three juveniles were also accused of participating in the crime.
Just before 6 a.m. on December 5, 2022, the 56-year-old licensed gun owner was smoking a cigarette in his truck when a dark sedan pulled up next to him in the 4700 block of West Arthington, officials said. Brown and a 15-year-old boy exited the sedan while two 16-year-old boys remained in the car.
Prosecutors said Brown pulled out a 45-caliber handgun with an extended ammunition magazine and pointed it at the man’s head while demanding his property.
But the concealed carry holder had another idea.
He quickly tried to disarm Brown by grabbing the gun’s extended magazine and then fought with Brown for control of the weapon, officials said. When Brown asked the 15-year-old for help, the concealed carry holder removed his own firearm from its holster and fired three rounds.
Brown and the 15-year-old were each shot in their shoulders. A 16-year-old in the getaway car’s driver’s seat was shot in the temple and critically wounded.
Officials said Brown let go of the gun and ran away with the 16-year-old after getting shot. They flagged down a Chicago police unit nearby and tried to convince the officers that they had been shot by someone who was trying to rob them, prosecutors alleged.
Meanwhile, the getaway car with the badly injured driver sped away from the scene and crashed into a fence, breaking the 16-year-old passenger’s leg.
Chicago police officers responded to a ShotSpotter alert at the robbery scene, located the concealed carry holder, and recovered Brown’s firearm.
Prosecutors charged him, the 15-year-old, and the 16-year-old getaway car passenger with attempted robbery. The badly injured driver was not immediately charged.
The car the robbers emerged from was used in a series of armed robberies in Wicker Park and neighboring areas shortly before Brown and the others were shot. A source said none of the victims in the earlier robberies was able to identify Brown or the juveniles as the people who robbed them and no charges were filed in the other crimes.
Judge Steven Watkins sentenced Brown, giving him 584 days of credit toward the nine-year sentence for time spent in jail since being arrested. Brown’s sentence will be reduced by 50% for good behavior.
