CHICAGO — A man accused of robbing a random woman after breaking into her Boystown apartment has been given a four-year prison sentence.
Derrick Mhoon, 22, received the sentence from Judge Aleksandra Gillespie after pleading guilty to one count of residential burglary. Prosecutors dropped three other felony charges, including robbery.
Chicago police responded to a burglary in progress at the woman’s apartment in the 700 block of West Belmont around 1 a.m. on July 17, 2023. As they arrived, they heard a woman screaming and the sounds of a struggle.
Derrick Mhoon (Chicago Police Department, Google)Officers said the 26-year-old opened the front door “in a panic” and explained that a man was in her apartment, and she didn’t know who he was. The woman was in her bedroom when she discovered Mhoon had entered the unit, apparently by breaking through the building’s main entrance door, police said. She locked her bedroom door and called the police.
Mhoon kicked the door in, punched the woman on the arm, and demanded her phone, police said in his arrest report. They claimed he had the woman’s driver’s license and credit cards when they arrested him.
Officers tried to get Mhoon charged with home invasion, but prosecutors never signed off on that.
He is scheduled to be paroled on April 30, 2025.
At the time of the burglary, Mhoon was on pretrial release for misdemeanor retail theft, a charge stemming from allegations that he tried to steal $385 worth of merchandise from an Uptown Target store. He pleaded guilty shortly after being arrested for the burglary and received a four-day sentence.
